One thing that is universal, I believe, is that everyone has hopes and dreams. Wherever we are, whatever we do, we seek for improvement, to grow, to become something more than we are right now. For some it is to increase what they are, deepen a knowledge or understanding, sharpen a skill. For others, those dreams may be an escape, an opportunity to leave behind what is and search out the great unknown in the hope of achieving something great.
In many areas of the world, sports are the font of many dreams. A young boy going up to bat at a dirt baseball field dreams he is standing in a massive stadium, listening to crowds cheer. A barefoot girl gives it her all in the last bit of the race, envisioning herself crossing an Olympic finish line.
I recently had the opportunity to help out with a service project in the Cayambe area of Ecuador. The family we were helping lived in very humble circumstances. As we finished our work and I looked around (the view was incredible), I was drawn to these shoes sitting drying on the roof.
As I looked at them, I could imagine a teenage kid lacing them up to play a game of soccer, only he was not playing on a dirt field, but a world cup stadium with crowds of millions looking on.
Hope is one of the most powerful forces for good in the world. May we do what we can to nurture it and strengthen it.
